Preventing Infant Mortality

Ok so this isn't homeopthic - but as my new role of Doula and Homeopathic Birth Support I think this is important. The film was produced by Dona International - the main association for Doulas is North America.

So that's where we came from

I'm teaching a workshop on Homeopathy for prenatal, labour and post natal care this Sat. at Pape Library in Toronto. 11:00 am (upstairs) - I though this was a cute story to introduce the class, Enjoy!

The 'Middle Wife' by an Anonymous 2nd grade teacher:

I've been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids myself, but the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own second grade classroom a few years back.

When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell. So I always have a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and usually, show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model airplanes, pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it in to school and talk about it, they're welcome.

Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow stuffed under her sweater.

She holds up a snapshot of an infant. 'This is Luke, my baby brother, and I'm going to tell you about his birthday.'

'First, Mom and Dad made him as a symbol of their love, and then Dad put a seed in my Mom's stomach, and Luke grew in there. He ate for nine months through an umbrella cord.'

She's standing there with her hands on the pillow, and I'm trying not to laugh and wishing I had my camcorder with me. The kids are watching her in amazement.

'Then, about two Saturdays ago, my Mom starts saying and going, 'Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh!' Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. 'She walked around the house for, like an hour, 'Oh, oh, oh!' (Now this kid is doing a hysterical duck walk and groaning.)

'My Dad called the middle wife. She delivers babies, but she doesn't have a sign on the car like the Domino's man. They got my Mom to lie down in bed like this.' (Then Erica lies down with her back against the wall.)

'And then, pop! My Mom had this bag of water she kept in there in case he got thirsty, and it just blew up and spilled all over the bed, like psshhheew!' (This kid has her legs spread with her little hands miming water flowing away. It was too much!)

'Then the middle wife starts saying 'push, push,' and 'breathe, breathe. They started counting, but never even got past ten. Then, all of a sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff that they all said it was from Mom's play-center, (placenta) so there must be a lot of toys inside there. When he got out, the middle wife spanked him for crawling up in there.'

Then Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her seat... I'm sure I applauded the loudest. Ever since then, when it's show-and-tell day, I bring my camcorder, just in case another 'Middle Wife' comes along.

Homeopathy Mentioned in the Bible

Maybe this is a little odd, but Dana Ullman does have a point. He claims that when Moses came down the mountain to find the Israelites worshiping the golden calf - he treated them homeopathically. And though his interpretation may sound like a bit of a stretch he does have a point. Strange that the bible should mention drinking a diluted gold solution. Check it out for yourself and come to your own conclusion.

More Research Supporting Homeopathy in the use of cancer

This is In vitro evidence supporting Homeopathy. Though I always question the usefullness since acurate Homeopathic prescribing is an art that takes into account all aspects of a person not just their pathology. And as a matter of fact all aspect of their experience of their pathology.

At least in-vitro studies show us that homeopathy affects cells - no placebo effect is influential.

Homeopathy for Flu Pandemics

From Andre Saine:

How does homeopathy address patients with infectious diseases? Homeopathic treatment is ideal to optimize the body's natural defenses against microbes. With the appropriate homeopathic treatment, people recover from infectious diseases, even the most serious ones, gently and rapidly. During past great epidemics such as diphtheria, scarlet fever, typhoid, cholera, yellow fever, malaria, etc., homeopathy decreased mortality by 10 to 30 times versus conventional medicine. During the infamous Spanish flu epidemic of 1918-19, it has been estimated that 25 to 50 million people died worldwide. In the United States alone, 550,000 died, approximately 10% of the people afflicted with the flu. Homeopathic physicians documented then more than 62,000 patients treated with homeopathy resulting in a mortality of 0.7%. For people who were sick enough to be hospitalized, conventional medicine had a mortality of 30% while with 27,000 documented hospitalized cases, homeopathy was reporting a mortality of 1.05% (Journal of the American Institute of Homeopathy 1921; 13:1028-43).

I don't have much time right now to talk at length on my views of this Swine Flu epidemic, and to do the research needed to write a descent article (I hope to do this in the following week) But seriously, how many people die yearly in North America from the flu? And compare to how many have died from this H1N1 influenza?

Luckily the stats on Homeopathy and past flu epidemics give me the confidence to say there's nothing to fear.

An interesting opinion on microwaves

Ok so this post has nothing to do with homeopathy but everything to do with health - so in an indirect way it does connect to homoepathy.

I haven't allowed a microwave in my house in over 10 years. They freak me out - who knows what all those invisible waves are doing to the molecules of my food, and are they really illegal in Russia? I've seen what can happen when you "nuke" an egg - boom! And is it any coincidence that we refer to microwaving food as nuking?

Anyways here's an interesting little article someone wrote

enjoy!

Fevers

So after teaching a workshop on Homeopathy for infants with a focus on fevers I found my little one sick, and slowly after a few days developing a fever. Being a first time mom faced with my first frightening fever I forgot all that I taught in my class, threw common sense out the window and started fretting over the "very high" 40 degree fever the baby was expressing.

I called my colleague and child's homeopath like 10 times that day, and despite his comforting words and warnings not to use any remedies unless the fever got really high (isn't 40 really high?). Of course I did not listen, and soon she was getting doses of chamomila, and belladonna. Eventually in fear of another sleepless night (as I also caught the cold and the fever) I resorted to Tylenol.

I'm happy to say baby has an vibrant life force which resisted all my attempts to suppress the fever. And after a couple of exhausting days and sleepless nights the fever resolved itself. Hurray! I hope I've learned my lesson and will avoid such silly parent behaviour next time I'm confronted with a fever.

So here's my advice in the face of a fever in an infant. Stay calm. According to the telehealth nurse there is no need to worry about a fever less than 40.6 degrees Celsius. And even then you're probably ok, but contact a Dr. just in case. And of course there are the common fever remedies such as Belladonna for a sudden high fever (yes higher than 40), Aconite for first stages of a cold or fever after exposure to cold and Ferrum Phos. for a low or medium fever that comes on slowly.

But if you can help it let the fever do its thing. This is a tool the body uses to heal itself, and who knows what can happen when you try to stop the body's innate ability to heal.

Homeopathy, Scientific?

The following is a link to a letter written by Brian D. Josephson, a Nobel laureate and Welsh physicist. Here he succinctly critiques criticisms of Homeopathy, such as the idea that serial dilution is ridiculous while in fact the alleged power of the remedy is not contained in the original substance but rather in the modification of the water.

Save Homeopathy in the UK

Homeopathy is under attack in the UK. Why in the UK more than other places? I believe it's because Homeopathy is covered by the health care system and because it is one of the few western nations with Homeopathic Hospitals.

Many believe that pharmaceuticals have too much to loose to cheaper more effective Homeopathy, and are therefore fighting a dirty battle to discredit the work we do. They feed the public lies claiming that there is no evidence that Homeopathy works when there is a large amount of research available that shows Homeopathy has significant effects in vitro and in people. Check out www.homeonetresearch.ca

Others say that Big Pharma is retaliating in England for profit losses they have suffered in India thanks to the increasing popularity of Homeopathy there. In the United Kingdom they have more influence and can use their massive lobby presence as well as carefully planted naysayers in the public media to minimize access to and support for Homeopathy.

What this comes down to in the end is the right of the individual to choose the type of care they want, even if you don't believe in Homeopathy allow those who do have access to their choice of health care.

Answers to some objections to homeopathy

taken from Homeopathy worked for me

"There are no tests which have shown homeopathy to work"
To begin with we need to be clear about what we mean by tests, since homeopathy has been shown to work in a number of different types of test, and this myth generally refers only to randomised control trials (RCTs).

And this is where the lack of logic kicks in. Some conventional medical treatments cannot be tested using the RCT model, and so evidence of effectiveness is based on the clinical evidence of cases. One example is surgery, another is psychiatry, and it is even the case that some drugs are prescribed on the basis of clinical evidence, rather than on the evidence from RCTs. In addition, drugs are usually withdrawn on the basisof the clinical evidence revealing dangers not identified in the RCTs, so clinical evidence is actually considered more important in the evaluation of treatent than RCTs. Homeopathy has an unequaled level of detail in its case histories which makes it possible to verify the success of treatment by study of clinical practice, and there are also good reasons for it not being easily tested using RCTs. As a result the demand for evidence from RCTs is inappropriate and intended to distort the truth.

There are two particular reasons why homeopathy cannot be tested properly in RCTs:

The remedy has to be individualised. RCTs are based on giving the same treatment to a large number of people and looking at the results, compared with those for a group which has been given an "inactive" treatment. If you give the same remedy to a large number of people who nominally have the same illness, but whose individual symptoms do not indicate that the remedy is appropriate, then it is an "inactive" treatment for some proportion of those people. The result is that you are comparing an "inactive" treatment not with an "active" one, but with a combination of "active" and "inactive" treatments. This will dilute the difference between the groups and make the treatment appear ineffective.
The sequence of remedies has to be individualised.  The best RCTs are generally conducted so that neither the patient nor the practitioner knows who is getting the "active" treatment and who the "inactive" one (double blind). In homeopathy, however, the practitioner needs to assess the patient's reaction to the previous remedy in order to decide how to proceed with the case. A lack of reaction to the remedy is important information as it may indicate that the wrong remedy or the wrong potency has been prescribed. Study of the case will lead to a decision about whether to change the remedy or potency. If the practitioner does not know whether the patient actually received the remedy, then it is impossible to make any accurate assessment of the case, and so the treatment becomes confused. This again will dilute the difference between the groups and make the treatment appear ineffective.

It is a measure of the power of homeopathy that even so there are trials which show it to be successful. A study of clinical trials of homeopathy by Kleijnen et al. (BMJ 1991; 302:316-323) concluded: ‘Overall, of the 105 trials with interpretable results, 81 trials (77%) indicated positive results.’ They also stated: ‘At the moment the evidence of clinical trials is positive but not sufficient to draw definite conclusions.’

"Homeopathy kills people"
This is a very new myth, and is literally impossible. Since the remedies stimulate the body's own healing processes, their action is precisely opposed to that of fatal illness. What is actually meant - is that homeopaths prevent or delay the use of "real" medicine, leading to a patient dying sooner than they might have done. In other words it is simply the argument that homeopathy is ineffective, dressed up in a more dramatic and particularly aggressive form. Only hypothetical evidence is ever produced to support this myth, since the truth is that generally patients come to homeopaths AFTER conventional treatment has failed, rather than before conventional treatment.

The truth is that even in the teeth of death, when nothing can be done to stop what is happening or to extend life, homeopathy can give relief and dignity to a person's last moments.

2.5 Million Cubans Successfully Vaccinated with Homeopathic Remedies

At a recent conference in Cuba (Dec.2008) Homeopaths from around the world presented cases of successful homeopathic prophylaxis. One of the most impressive cases presented came from Cuba itself, thanks to trade embargoes, a country free from the pressures of the pharmaceutical lobby.

Cuba suffers from yearly epidemics of Leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that can cause a variety of symptoms including: high fever, severe headache, chills, muscle aches, vomiting, jaundice, abdominal pain, diarrhea, or a rash. If the disease is not treated, the patient could develop kidney damage, meningitis , liver failure, and respiratory distress. (according to the CDC)

According to a preliminary report by the Finlay Institute:

"On October November 2007, three provinces of the eastern region of Cuba were affected by strong rainfalls causing floods of big areas and several damages to sanitary and health systems. The risk of leptospirosis infection raised extremely dangerous levels with about 2 million of peoples exposed to potentially contaminated water.

Considering this situation, the Finlay Institute prepared a leptospira nosode 200 CH using 4 circulating strains and following international quality standards. A multidisciplinary team travelled to the affected regions to conduct the massive administration of the nosode. Coordinated action with public health system infrastructures allowed the administration of a preventive treatment consisting in two doses (7- 9 days apart) of the nosode to about 2,4 million of people (4,8 million of doses). The coverage of the intervention rose up to 95% percent of total population of the three provinces at risk."

The typical expectancy of illness would have been in the thousands even with allopathic vaccinations, along with many deaths. The problem with dispensing the usual allopathic vaccination was the high cost which prevented getting the vaccination to those most at risk, namely children, pregnant women and the elderly. The usual cost for vaccinating the population is around 3 million dollars for 2.5 million people.

Following the use of the homeopathic profilaxis made from the leptospirosis bacteria in August 2007 (a time of typical high incidence thanks to hurricane season)there were only 10 cases of leptospirosis and no deaths resulting from the disease. In all of 2008 there were no deaths and rates of infection never went over 10 people per month.

This is an important historical event as such immunization would not have been allowed anywhere else.

We eagerly await the full report.

The Immortal Jellyfish

If a remedy of this little creature - Turritopsis nutricula - hasn't been proven I believe it's time. Who knew an animal actually exists that defies death and reverts to a colonial polyp stage to start again. Incarnation without demise!

Rajan Sankaran has recently put out a book on mollusks, and though this creature isn't a mollusk it would be an interesting addition to the book.

This remedy could be the ultimate sea remedy combining the themes. According to Massimo Mangialavori the link between sea life and the uterus is clear - how does an animal who lives in the sea and keeps reverting to infancy relate homeopathicaly to a human? Would it have medusa themes as the two creatures are related?

Sea remedy themes include isolation, difficulty communicating, aversion to company, desire for solitude, mood swings, issues of independence and dependence, grief, sadness, and depression

I challenge someone to do a proving of this remedy and I would love to help you out.
